Trailer just dropped:
Pretty short trailer, hard to say what's going on or what the gameplay will be like.
At least looks less clunky than Underworld Ascendant.

Competitive Thievery. Reminds me of the FMs Embracing the Enemy and Burrick's Head Inn, where you're competing with another rival thief on the same job at the same time, and other players are playing the rival thieves. Looks fun although I've been turned off of stylized games for a while now.

I jumped on my couch when I saw the trailer, like wtf is happening now ?I’m so hyped, of course that’s not OG Thief but that’s Garrett, and at some point, it means some people still have an eye on the franchise…

This looks like the game Arkane should have made instead of Redfall. I almost thought it had to be them when the trailer started playing, alas.

I'll be honest, I'm more concerned about the execution than the idea. And, yeah, it's silly that Arkane were forced to make a Borderlands-y looter shooter instead of a competitive Deus Ex-y thing,

I could be wrong, but I'm skeptical this will succeed.
I believe most immersive sim and stealth fans prefer singleplayer games. And surviving as a multiplayer game-as-service franchise appears fraught with peril. Most companies trying to do this just go out of business after capitulating to games like Fortnite and Overwatch.
It's likely there are already competitive stealth games within the Roblox and Fortnite ecosystems. People comfortable and familiar with those ecosystems don't tend to leave their comfort zone for long... if at all. Because of the nature of games-as-service as a paradigm, many of those gamers are literally deeply invested in those ecosystems.
So if a majority of older gamers who know the names Spector and LoPiccolo prefer singleplayer games, and a majority of younger gamers are already entrenched in their existing multiplayer ecosystems and communities... where does the money come from to sustain this project beyond the first few weeks?
Not to mention... if anyone even slightly researches the studio name, they'll come across the humiliating mess of their last release.

My average Splinter Cell co-op experience with Jesh has been me playing it like it's Doom while he plays it like it's Thief. I've had a ball, but he might not describe it in exactly the same terms. Aragami 1 & 2 also let us both sneak around and murder people and did a pretty good job of letting me use the jank to my advantage (which is to say, play it like Tenchu-Doom as much as possible), which also may have caused some amount of exasperation for people watching the hijinx. I enjoyed it immensely, and would recommend it if you, like me, are great at annoying friends who think you're not going to annoy them this time.
This game weaponises that, as far as I can see. Which should be fun, except if it's competitive all the time, it might be annoying to me. I guess I'll deal; but the more important thing is that every game I've mentioned has been a relatively niche experience, especially the multiplayer portions. In no uncertain terms, this will be a niche game too - but the potential for hijinx is what's selling it for me. And I think if they're able to market that well, it just might break through to the general public's awareness. Obviously, there needs to be more innovative stuff than just the competitive fuckery, but there's room for it from what they've shown, and I am intrigued. I've got my fingers crossed for 'em.

Will they add thief guild vs thief guild mode? the mode's moniker would be 'taffer tournament'

playing my favorite garret's line " I could learn to hate these guys"

Thief goes Fortnite! Yay! All the 10 year olds who used to play Thief 1 back in the day are going to love this, right? The best crowd to appeal to, the ones with no money. lol. Paradox has the right idea... this dude, not so much.

Yeah MP is a big turn off for me as well. Even if it turns out good the most I'll get out of it is trying it when it hits game pass or whatever, going "hey this is pretty fun!" and then playing a few matches before never touching it again.
RPS interview with Spector & LoPiccolo
Regarding Underworld:
There are reasons to be wary. OtherSide’s only released game to date, Underworld Ascendant, was another spiritual successor to a beloved immersive sim - but ended in buggy disaster, disappointing its Kickstarter backers. “We were focused on building a damn studio,” Spector admits, “and probably didn’t pay enough attention.” This time around, OtherSide has the help of publisher Megabit, who can shoulder much of the business side while the developers focus on making games.
“It’s a completely different team [working on Thick as Thieves],” Spector says. “A larger team more capable of tackling the incredible challenges of making immersive sims. No one believes me until they work on these games - what we do here is harder than what most people do in game development. And we have people who are talented enough, and enough of them, to pull it off.”

Honestly, the live service thing bothers me more than the multiplayer bit.
Once you find the rare stealth-loving immersive sim fan willing to try multiplayer, you then turn them off with the live service bit. Or at least you keep them from coming back enough for you to be profitable.
Like henke, I can see this being a fun little thing to try, even if I'm not interested in committing much time to it. I just don't see how they'll remain profitable. It's more likely that Megabit will be the new Eidos for these LookingGlass vets, closing the studio when OtherSide can't pay Megabit back for all the money they fronted.
And unless they decide to integrate some kind of singleplayer option (which doesn't sound likely at this point), once the company or game goes belly up, you're left with a completely useless game in your Steam/GOG/Epic account, with any money you spent on it completelly wasted.

Definitely wasn't interested when I saw the trailer at the video game awards. It's not for me, based on the graphics, animations, multi-player aspect/focus, and several other things.
It's getting tiresome to get new stealth games that have hints of Thief, or are made by those who have Thief in their DNA, or are games that are inspired (minimally) by Thief, but are not Thief at all. (Dishonored, for example). Since every games takes 3-5 years to make, each time a game like this is announced by a studio who might be willing to make a true Thief-like stealth game, there goes another 5-10 years with no true Thief game. And a drift farther and farther away from single-player immersive stealth campaign, and closer and closer to a Call of Duty stealth game where non-stop action is its middle name.
My interest was lifted a little by watching this interview with the Lead Designer at Otherside Entertainment and some of the things he says, though. Made me not want to rule the game out completely yet, as there sounded like some interesting qualities that the trailer doesn't convey. You may or may not agree. It still makes me sad that it's another missed Thief opportunity. See the 8h:48m:45s mark for start of the hour(?) long interview:https://www.youtube.com/live/inViiW_I7-g?t=31725s
It's been a couple weeks since I watched it, so I apologize I can't provide any useful timestamps with tasty nuggets of info. And I don't remember enough of the interview to transpose any quotes or useful bits of info from memory. I just know I heard a few things that gave me some hope, and some curiosity to see more reveals.

Maybe the more participants from the Taffer community, the better, to help shape the game more for taffers. Is there a chance they will completely ditch what they have and switch to a single-player game with true Thief-like gameplay, similar to TDP going from Dark Camelot to TDP? haha, doubt it, but is nice to have wishful thinking sometimesLast edited by Darkness_Falls; 4th Jan 2025 at 14:22.
