Les rois mongols
Directed by Luc Picard
Synopsis
12-years-old Manon promises her younger brother, Mimi, that they will stay together, despite their difficult family circumstances and the ominous signs of being put into foster care. During the height of Quebec's FLQ Crisis in 1970, they stage their own rebellion by kidnapping an elderly woman and hiding her in the country, aided by their two cousins.

Scavenger Hunt #37-April 2018Task 5. A movie that has a different title than the book or story it is adapted from.
Name of novel: Salut mon roi mongol !
I liked it, despite the fact that the children had a "plan" that they didn't quite think through. But they were kids. The music choices for the time period were pretty good. The film provided good background on the FLQ - basically a group that wanted Quebec to leave Canada and be their own country. The political unrest mixed with the family drama made for interesting viewing without being preachy or dry.
Vegan alert:-There is a gun that is used for hunting animals.-They talk about wanting to eat chickens.
This is the 190th film I've seen using Movie Pass.

A father tells his daughter Manon that the FLQ are good guys who do bad things, which, in a way, also applies to Manon. It's also a way to describe characters comprising a film that acutely shows moral ambiguities.

Berlinale Trip, Movie 6: "Cross My Heart"For me "Cross My Heart" belongs to the beloved kind of movies that give you a nostalgic flash even though you've never really been in a comparable situation you could refer to. Besides it masterfully manages to realize look and vibe of the Canadian 70s in a believable and thus pretty immersive way. And although the plot isn't game-changingly innovative it's still capable of making the audience commit into both happening and characters. That's why when the credits ran down I felt deeply moved by the sensitive way "Cross My Heart" deals with topic of growing up.
