How long will my solar PV panels last?
A minimum of 25 years. Per industry standards, photovoltaic or PV panels are manufactured to give a guaranteed productive lifespan of 25 years, given that their maintenance needs are met promptly and responsibly. However, a solar panel continues to generate power for many years beyond its standard lifespan but at a diminished capacity than what had been projected by the manufacturer. Therefore, you can expect your solar panels to continue to work for several decades.
Will my solar system need regular maintenance?
Yes, but very little. With periodic cleaning and annual professional inspections, you can easily keep your solar PV panels working at their peak production capacity levels. In most cases, especially for panels on a tilt, this maintenance schedule feels effortless and costs very little to the solar owners. The periodic light cleaning includes clearing any buildups of dirt, leaves and other debris to ensure maximum sunshine absorption. However, your solar system company can best guide you on your system's maintenance needs depending on your location's weather conditions and other nuances.
What are the environmental gains of going solar?
Solar is a sustainable power source with noticeable benefits for the environment, its habitats, and public health, which explains the title "green energy". Generating your own solar energy using photovoltaic solar panels is a clean, zero-carbon emission process, unlike conventional energy sources responsible for climate change. Moreover, there is no energy loss during energy transmission as solar plants are located on the site. Solar can ultimately reduce or eliminate your dependence on grid electricity and lower your carbon footprint.
Does going solar mean no electricity bills?
No, if you are connected to the grid. The biggest reason homes and businesses switch to solar is to reduce or even eliminate electricity costs, but your monthly electricity bills won't disappear as long as you are connected to the grid. Grid-connected solar power plants are regulated as per the net metering provisions. The net meter installed with your solar energy system monitors the energy transfer between your home and the grid and records it in the monthly billing cycle. Therefore, you can expect a net zero charge if you don't withdraw any electricity from the grid and a positive solar credit balance if your solar energy exports exceed the grid withdrawals.
How do I select the right size of the solar energy system?
Once you realize that switching to solar is a smart investment, the next big question is to decide how much your home or commercial facility really needs. Sizing your solar PV system will require you to look into several factors that affect the power output (measured in kilowatts, kW). These factors include your current energy usage, the location's total sunlight hours, roof characteristics like space and shading, battery storage, and more. Your solar system company in India, like Amplus Solar, can perform an on-site solar inspection and accurately size and design your system for free without any obligation to make the purchase.
What are the buying options in the solar market?
There are two main buying options available in the market:-
OPEX Model – In this, a third-party investor owns the solar plant. The consumer and the producer enter into a PPA (power purchase agreement) for a decided duration of time which is typically 15-25 years. During the tenure of PPA, the consumer pays the producer for the power generated at a decided tariff. After the PPA terminates, the solar plant is transferred to the consumer.
CAPEX (Capital Expenditure) Model – In this, end consumer owns the solar plant by purchasing it upfront and can avail various financing options like bank loans to finance the solar plant.
What is net metering?
Net Metering is a policy which allows you to sell excess solar power generated back to the grid ensuring maximum savings from the solar plant. For more information on net metering, click here.
How much does a Solar PV system cost?
Below are the approximate costs for a 100KW set up:
Rs. 65-75 lacs for the household sector.
Rs. 55-65 lacs for larger commercial & industrial sector.
Utility-scale is even cheaper owing to economies of scale.
To get the plant size and cost most relevant to you, check out our solar calculator.
Is Solar Power cheaper than the grid and diesel power?
Solar power is much cheaper than the power from grid and diesel generators. Today average cost of power from solar is Rs. 4.5-5 per kWh (For commercial and Industrial segments) while the average cost of power from the grid is Rs. 7 per kWh and Rs 16 per kWh from a diesel generator. (A litre of diesel generates around 3-4 kWh).
How will I save from Rooftop Solar plant?
In OPEX model with no initial capital investment from the client, systems start paying for itself immediately as solar Tariff is way lesser than your current cost of power from Distribution company and Diesel Generator Backup set. And as the gap between solar tariff and the grid tariff increase over the years; the savings also increase.
How much time does it take to install a Solar PV system?
It can range between 2-10 weeks depending on the complexity of the project.
Is my rooftop right for Solar plant?
If your roof is not having any shade from adjacent buildings, trees etc and its structure is not delicate then your roof is suitable for installation of solar plant. Solar plant can also be installed on car parks, open shade ground within your premises by erecting special mounting structures
The roofs of my premises are weak. Can I put Solar PV on my roof?
A proper evaluation will be done by Amplus to see if the solar plant can be put up on your premises.
What would be the annual maintenance cost involved for a solar PV system?
The annual maintenance cost is not very significant as the system only requires cleaning of modules (every 2-3 weeks) and basic preventive and corrective electrical maintenance (every 3 months) Water is generally used to clean the panels – Typically 5 litres of water is required for a KWh. Amplus will take care of the operation and maintenance of the plant at its own cost for the tenure of PPA tenure.
Are there any approvals required to install a Solar PV system?
No permissions are required if you are installing an off-grid solar PV system. But in case you wish to integrate your solar system with the grid to avail net metering option, certain permissions are required to be taken from the respective DISCOM and the state government.
How much area is required to install a rooftop solar system?
This would depend on various factors such as the shadow-free area available, the orientation of the roof etc, however, as a thumb rule, we can assume 1KW plant requires 12 sq meters of shade-free area.
How does solar plant impact my roof integrity?
Amplus uses non-penetrating structures which are mounted without any puncturing. Thus, the integrity of the roof is maintained. The load of the entire solar plant is about 10-15 kg/square meter and can easily be taken by any roof
How do I know that the solar setup is working efficiently?
It is advisable to install an energy monitoring system along with your solar plant that will allow you to compare the actual with the estimated performance on daily, monthly and annual basis.
What are the key factors that affect solar power generation?
Following factors should be kept in mind:-
- Locations and layout of the solar plant.
- Roof Orientation and shade-free area.
- Quality of equipment
- Design of the solar plant.
- Maintenance of the plant.
How much energy will be generated from a 1 KW solar plant?
On an average, every 1 KW setup produces 1300 to 1500 units in a year. This may, however, vary based upon the location of the plant, seasonal factors, surroundings and shadow-free area available. You can consider 1400 units for sake of calculations.
Why is it that a 100 kW solar plant not produce 100 kW power?
Solar Power is an intermittent source of energy depending on irradiation, the temperature of the region and a lot of other environmental factors. Hence, a 100 kW plant won’t produce 100 kW power.
Does rain affect the performance of solar plant?
The electricity generation of the plant suffers during rainy and cloudy days especially during the monsoon season, but the generation never drops to zero. The loss of generation during monsoon and other rains is already adjusted in the 1.3 to 1.5 Lakhs unit/100kWp/annum generation number.
Can I use solar energy only for certain loads?
No, Solar energy is integrated into the LT panel of consumer premises, wherein DG, Grid or other generator sources would be feeding power as of now. When solar energy is injected, the equipment is unaware of the source from which power is feeding in. Hence it is not possible to segregate the loads on basis of the power source.
Will a Solar plant meet 100% of my power requirement?
Technically yes, a solar plant can meet your entire power requirement if it is backed by battery energy storage system (BESS). But practically, for commercial and industrial users where the power requirement is higher, it would be recommended to use solar in sync with the grid. When in sync, priority is automatically given to the solar power to be consumed first.
Will my plant generate during the night?
The Solar plant will generate electricity only during the Sunny hours, typically between 6 A.M. to 6 P.M and will not generate any electricity during the night.
Will a Solar plant system produce the same energy output throughout the day?
Since Solar PV works based on the amount of sunlight it receives, it starts generating the output at around 6 am in the morning and stops at about 7 pm in the evening depending on the plant location. The generation increases gradually and peaks at noon and then gradually decreases as the Sun goes down. Since it’s a grid interactive plant the functioning of your electrical equipment is not affected.
Will I face problems of Voltage fluctuations and tripping if heavy loads like AC are switched on ?
Amplus offers a Grid Interactive Rooftop Solar plant which matches the frequency and voltage of your Grid and Diesel Generator and runs in sync with them. The electricity created by the solar plant is exactly like the one you are sourcing from Grid/DG and it will be fed in simultaneously with them. Thus, there will be no voltage fluctuations and you can use/connect any number of heavy loads equipment.
