Why You'll Love This Recipe
Light texture: This protein mousse is whipped which makes it ultra fluffy.
Easy to make: With only a handful of ingredients this mousse recipe comes together quickly.
High protein: Thanks to chocolate protein powder this dessert has a whopping 19 grams of protein.
Allergy-friendly: Though not vegan this recipe is naturally dairy and gluten-free depending on the protein powder you choose.
This blog post has been sponsored by Naked Nutrition. Protein powder that not only tastes good but has nothing to hide.
Ingredients You’ll Need
Egg whites: you’ll want to use fresh egg whites that have been separated from the yolks as they work the best. Egg whites from the carton don’t fluff up enough for this recipe.
Vegan protein powder: not all protein powders are created equal and thus, the brand you choose will affect the texture and flavor. This protein mousse was made with Naked Nutrition’s Rice Protein Powder which is what helps give this mousse not only its protein intake but also its light, fluffy texture. It's great for this chocolate protein pudding too.
Vanilla extract: the better quality of your vanilla extract the more flavorful it will be in the mousse. That’s why I try my best to use pure vanilla extract and not artificial.
Cacao powder: this gives the mousse its rich chocolate flavor but also a burst of nutrients. Learn more about the difference between cacao powder and cocoa powder and know that by choosing cacao you’re getting more calcium, antioxidants, and flavor.
Mini chocolate chips: to keep this mousse recipe allergy-friendly, I use enjoy life chocolate chips. However, regular chocolate chips should work. With mini chocolate chips you get a bigger bang for your buck so opt for mini.
Full fat coconut milk: this is what replaces the cream from traditional mousse. Make sure to use full fat coconut milk or your mousse will come out thin and more pudding-like.
Important Teaching Tips
Make sure to use full-fat coconut milk. Otherwise, your mousse will be runny.
Do not beat the protein powder into the egg whites as it tends to clump. It works better if it’s added to the heated coconut milk instead. And when adding it, make sure to keep the mixer going.
Whip the egg whites longer than you think. You really want them foaming.
Traditionally, rice protein has a chalkier flavor than pea protein, know that both will work in this recipe.
You can easily make peanut butter chocolate mousse by subbing the cacao powder for powdered peanut butter.
Keep in mind also that vanilla protein powder or chocolate will work for the recipe. Using a chocolate protein will result in a richer flavor.

Step 5: Portion into mini jars or serving cups and let sit in the fridge for 4 hours to firm up before serving.
Which Protein Powder To Use
This high protein chocolate mousse was made with Naked Nutrition Brown Rice protein powder.
This is important because each protein powder (especially pea protein versus rice protein powder) will absorb liquid differently.
Learn more about choosing protein powder for your goals but know that this protein powder is dairy-free, gluten-free, and soy-free.
Another thing to note is that because vegan protein powder absorbs more than whey protein, you can’t substitute one for the other (though they have some wicked whey proteins if you tolerate dairy).
One of the reasons I was excited to work with Naked Nutrition is because their protein is free from additives and artificial sweeteners.
They’re not shy about their ingredients. This company prioritizes healthy ingredients and no fillers. This means that they focus on your health, not just the “bottom line”.

Storing It
Protein chocolate mousse needs roughly four hours to set after mixing all the ingredients. During these four hours and afterward, it should be placed in the fridge and covered with plastic wrap.
Once covered, it will last 3-4 days in the fridge. This means it’s a great dessert to prep in advance or the night before.
And though you can top it with whipped cream ahead of time, it tastes best when topped freshly before serving.
Fun Flavor Toppings
One of the best things about this recipe is that you can make it as sinfully delicious or simple as you like.
This is what makes it perfect for Mother’s Day: everyone can top their own.
Personally, when I serve this protein mousse, I top mine with:
- 2 ingredient whole30 whipped cream
- Shaved dark chocolate
- Dairy-free chocolate ganache
However, adding fresh fruit, drizzled peanut butter, chocolate chips, or toasted coconut are delicious options also.
Frequently Asked Questions
How is protein mousse different than protein pudding?
Protein mousse is much lighter and fluffier than protein pudding. Typically, protein pudding is made using a base of Greek yogurt and comes out very thick. Protein mousse on the other hand is made by beating egg whites to give it a light, melt-on-your-tongue texture.
Is chocolate protein mousse a good post-workout snack?
Protein chocolate mousse can definitely be used as a post-workout snack if you have it ready. Because it takes time to set, you’d need to prep in in advanced. However, with XX grams of protein, this chocolate mousse works well to give your muscles some of the fuel they need post-workout.
Can I substitute whey protein powder in place of vegan protein powder?
Because vegan protein powder absorbs so much liquid when mixed, whey protein powder cannot be used in its place.
